Security of Funds is a Major Issue for Parent Teacher Organizations and Booster Clubs

 

 On one day in February 2008:

A  Polk Avenue Elementary Parent Teacher Organization charged its treasurer for missing $15,000

A former PTO President of Jay Elementary School was charged with misuse of the PTO’s credit card

A woman was charged with defrauding her PTO of nearly $16,000

A Clair woman who was president of the Parent Teacher board was charged with embezzling $7,765 from the group

 

After one incident, a Superintendent said that the children of their school “… have suffered a great loss. The community has been permanently damaged by this crime. Damage to the spirit of a community is a cost that cannot be quantified.”
